Trichiasis

Trichiasis is a disorder in which the eyelashes are misdirected towards the ocular surface, without an associated in-turning of the eyelid margin. It is an acquired condition caused by inflammatory or traumatic processes involving the eyelid margin. Patients may present with ocular irritation, photophobia, tearing, pain, secondary blepharospasm, or conjunctival congestion with discharge. Temporary relief measures include lubricants and contact lens wear, but optimal treatment requires destruction of the eyelash follicles responsible for the aberrant eyelash growth using electrolysis, cryotherapy, or laser ablation.
